Two friends, Georgie and Euphemia(Phemie), in 1835 are seperated by the death of Phemie's father. Phemie moves to Texas to live with her sister Sarah. While in Texas, wars are breaking out. Sarah is in charge of leading the women of their town away from Texas to the US border of Kentucky, while their husbands are fighting Santa Ana.
Back in Georgia, Georgia Lawshe is dealing with her own problems. She has just learned that she has Indian in her blood. Indians are scrutinized and spit on in Georgia. They are also being pushed out of their own land. Georgia has to promise her family not to reveal the family secret or they too may be pushed out of their house.
Georgia and Phemie lose contact
for about ten years. All grown up, Georgia moves to Texas with her husband
and children. At this time, the United States Civil War has outbroken.
Diseases are also running strong and Georgia and Euphemia are trying to
save themselves and their crops from distruction. Together, Georgia and
Euphemia cope with their husbands at war, sexism, racism, and more.
